Date Night with Daddy!

Dave and I decided that it would be better for him and Chloe to clear out of the house for the majority of Solana's slumber party. So Chloe got a special and rare treat - a one-on-one date night with her Daddy! She was super excited and felt so special. She wore her new fancy Dora the Explorer dress and put on her fanciest date manners.
I don't remember having date-nights with my Daddy. I don't think it was really a thing back then but I can just imagine how exciting it would have been. They went to the movies. Heaven help me but I can't remember which one. Afterwards, though, they went out for pizza.
Chloe's "kid's" pizza was giant! She hates messy fingers and always eats her pizza with a fork.
After the date they came home and were just in time for cake and ice cream. Chloe couldn't have cared less that she missed the majority of the party. She had a wonderful night.

Bluebell's Haircut

Poor Bluebell has torn her ACL. We're not sure how extensive the damage is but we're hoping it's not all the way through and can heal on its own. Surgery is not something we want for her. In the meantime, we decided to shave off her winter coat since it's difficult for her to pop a proper squat on 3 legs. Less fur makes for a cleaner dog, if you catch my drift.

Here's Dave working with his new dog razor and Solana is helping. She seems to be the only one enjoying the process, though.

Tamale Making 2014

Almost immediately after my parents left I decided I absolutely had to have homemade tamales. I've made them a couple of times before and it's a LOT of work! I wish I'd decided to make them while they were still here.

Cooking/shredding the meat and making the masa is pretty much a day's work. Spreading the masa and rolling the tamales really needs to happen on the second day if you want to walk upright to bed (vs. crawl) . That's the way it is for me, anyway. I'm sure there are plenty of people who can do it all in one day but not me. When I grew up tamale making happened at my Grandmother's (we grandkids call her "Mom") house and there were usually 6-8 people around the table working together. Fortunately, I was able to enlist Dave's help this year. I spread the masa and he filled, rolled, and tied them. Solana actually spread a few, too, but then decided she had better things to do. She did about 3, I think. Maybe next year she'll do a whole half dozen :-)

We made about 11 dozen of mostly pork and also some bean/jalapeno tamales. They came out pretty good but I think I overcooked them just a bit.

I love tamales! They're especially good with a nice big guacamole salad and maybe some refried beans with Spanish rice. Yum!

Grammy and Grampy Visit!

We were supposed to travel to Texas for Christmas but we decided at the last minute to stay in Ohio. Grammy and Grampy decided to visit us! We had a lovely visit and here are some of the highlights:

We're all dressed up and heading out to dinner! Unfortunately, I had to set up the camera on the counter, which isn't high enough, so the picture is sort of looking up all our noses. :-)

Dave and the girls always put out cookies and then read the Night Before Christmas.

 Presents!

We went to the zoo one day. It.was.cold.But it was nice to get out of the house for a bit. It wasn't so bad after we had been walking around, either. The only bad part was eating lunch outside as soon as we got there. Maybe we should have packed hot soup instead of sandwiches…
My parents were so cold! They're not used to the Ohio cold weather. I sewed them some fleece pajama bottoms and I think they loved them!
 Grammy reading to the girls.

We spent a lot of time hanging around the house. There's not too much else to do in such cold weather. I was worried that my parents might be too bored but I think they enjoyed the relaxation. We had time for a few selfies, at least.

More relaxation at home. Grampy even dozed on the couch a few times!

Cooking with my mom. We made my favorite soup, Tomato, Kale, and Barley. And after all the healthy vegetarian meals, my Dad even said he slept better at night!

Sick Monty

You may not want to read this if you're easily grossed out. But this absolutely MUST go on the books. This was one illness to remember! Monty caught some kind of dog virus. We think the dog sitter brought it over because another dog she cared for that week had a similar illness the week she cared for them both. He got sick the week after we returned from Georgia. Long story short he had bloody diarrhea and didn't eat for 6 days. Our vet came over and gave him subQ fluids and some meds. We ended up at the clinic for blood work and more meds before he got better. It was super scary on days 3-6 when he refused to eat or drink and we couldn't figure out where the bloody runs could possibly be coming from. His rear end was a constant slick of blood and I couldn't keep up with the mess so we ended up putting old towels down in the four seasons room and just leaving the sliding door open for him to let himself out. I felt so bad for him.

But I also felt bad for Dave. All the rear-end washing I did couldn't compare to the 7 hours he spent cleaning the kitchen and fireplace room floors after this overnight poop extravaganza. Before we set him up in the four seasons room and not realizing how bad off he was we locked Monty in the kitchen overnight. Poor guy had no choice. But really poor Dave. He mopped several times with hot water, then vinegar, and finally pine-sol. Then he vigorously scrubbed the grout with oxy-clean until it was white. On a positive note, our grout has never looked so good. Who knew it was supposed to be light grey?

A few days after Monty recovered Bluebell had loose stools. I panicked and gave her gorilla butt. There's no way I was even going to TRY and wash that rear end after constant pooping! Fortunately, she wasn't sick but she was humiliated...
Dude, you are so lucky you're cute...

Valentine's Day Preparation

Dave and Solana have visited the local chocolate shop together the past couple of years to "secretly" buy me chocolates for Valentine's Day. This year Chloe joined in on the annual tradition and they all took off last night after dinner to sample and buy me some yummy Valentine's Day treats. Somehow, their big secret mission is never secret but I feign ignorance and we're all happy. Chloe burst the bubble on our pretend secret last night, though, when she rushed into the house and announced, "Mommy! We bought you some CHOCOLATES!" It was just about the cutest blown pretend surprise ever. I'll still act surprised tomorrow and Valentine's Day will survive.

It's funny how we all pretend it's a secret but all know very well that it isn't. Why do we do this? And how is it still fun year after year? I have no idea. But the chocolates are yummy so I'm playing along!

Vegetable Garden 2012

It's actually 2013 but I just realized that I never posted about my vegetable garden last year. Dave delivered a huge gift to me for Mother's Day. After two years of whining about my sunless garden spot in the back corner of our lot he decided to build me a new one. I was so excited!!!

He first built four square gardens. I don't know if you can see but he even drilled holes in the boxes and laced twine back and forth through the garden to make them Square Foot Gardens. I first borrowed Mel Bartholemew's Square Foot Garden book from the library a couple of years ago and I'm definitely converted to his method of gardening. The idea is to produce a large variety of vegetables for a family in a small space. Instead of growing rows of vegetables you grow small blocks of vegetables. Each square garden contains 16 - 1x1' squares and each square can potentially hold a different type of vegetable.

In these pictures Dave already built the garden boxes. Together we mixed the soil and filled the boxes. It's a mixture of vermiculite, peat moss, homemade compost, and horse manure.

You can barely see my little plants in the garden. They were all started from seeds indoors or sewn directly into the soil. The cardboard is covering the newly planted seeds to keep them from drying out.

In these four small gardens I grew: 5 types tomato, cucumber, tomatillo, ground cherries, basil, cilantro, parsley, catnip, oregano, nasturtium, dwarf sunflower, marigold, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, carrots, bell pepper, serrano pepper, radishes. All from seed.

By July the garden had really taken off. Here you can see how he finished the frame of the fence, covered the grass with garden cover and pebbles, added a gate, and entry stones. It's a beautiful garden.
We saw many firsts. First tiny tomato
First tiny cucumber
First harvest: lettuce and radishes. This was actually earlier. I'm thinking late May.
First flower

By the end of the growing season I was definitely appreciating Dave's hard work. And my hard work tending the garden was really paying off!

I grew tons of veggies. We'd never eaten fresh veggies in such large quantities. It felt good! Dave picked up this basket at a garage sale for $1 and this $1 basket worked hard. I can't even say how many times we filled it.

As we came closer to the fall the big tomatoes really started ripening. I par boiled, peeled, seeded, and froze lots. We're now well into January and still using frozen tomatoes in recipes. I've made tomato sauce, meat sauce, enchilada sauce, tomato/kale/barley soup, you name it. I also froze a huge stash of bell peppers and made a yummy bell pepper soup. It was sort of like goulash.
As the Spring approaches I anxiously await the start of gardening season. I save my unused seeds from the previous year and use them again. (I keep them in an airtight tin with plenty of those little dry packs that keep moisture out of foods.) I didn't buy any seeds last year. But I have bought a few new ones to add to the mix for this year. They arrived in the mail last week. I can't wait to get them started!
